The Origin Of '3'
The Hong Kong based telecommunication company Hutchison Whampoa started developing the 3G services under a new brand
name, 3. They are the parent company of Hutchison Telecom.
Hutchison Whampoa was the first company to deliver 3G services in commercial form with high speed video telephony,
downloads, streaming along with data, voice and music services. The 3G licenses are held by the company in nine
countries: UK, Sweden, Norway, Macau, Italy, Ireland, Denmark, Austria and Australia. In countries such as Israel,
Indonesia and Hong Kong, the 3G licenses are owned by subsidiaries of Hutchison Telecom.

of the latter. At the time Hutchison International was working under Sir Douglas Clague. In 1977 the new company,
Hutchison Whampoa, ran into major losses. It was saved by the Hong Kong Bank. The Hong Kong Bank also replaced Mr
Clague. In September 1979, the bank announced that the stakes of Hutchison Whampoa would be sold for HK $639 to
Cheung Kong.
Hutchison Whampoa is currently active in 56 countries with a total of around 220,000 employees. The company
handles five major businesses; these include ports and related services, hotels, property, retail, energy,
investments and telecommunications. The company has earned a big name in the telecoms world and continues
to expand.
The history of '3'
The government in the United Kingdom issued five licenses to run third generation wireless services in May 2000.
The largest of these licenses was reserved for a new entrant to raise the competition in the market. This license
had a guaranteed roaming agreement. Hutchison 3G, now called 3, acquired this license.
3 have the considerable advantage in being capable of providing a complete range of multimedia services. In
2003, 3 started the first video mobile network in the United Kingdom. This brought new and better services
to the mobile media market. Although 3G was a new technology, 3 completed the license regulatory requirements
three years before it was scheduled.
Shareholders of '3'
3 UK is completely owned by Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL). HWL is one of the largest companies in Hong Kong.
Whilst working under the 3 brand, HWL is the leader of the ongoing revolution in the 3G scene. HWL was one of
the first operators around the globe to begin 3G services. They have 3G licenses in eleven markets including
the United Kingdom. Its customer base exceeds ten million.
3G network
A 3G network supplies high quality, media-rich audio and video content to mobile phones. This network makes
it possible to send and receive multimedia content and information and see and hear video clips many times
quicker than some other networks.
3 are continually increasing the boundaries of the 3G network. They have
introduced the High Speed Data Packet Application (HSDPA) and Inter-System Call Handover (ISHO). HSDPA downloads
content three times faster than current 3G speeds. ISHO permits calls to cross seamlessly between 3G and 2G
networks.
